Changing With the Times
Recycling Inspiration

A few months ago, I found a post for a digital media conference called Black Girls in Media | Digital Conference 2.0. It was amazing. The event held sessions on digital media, starting your business, and freelancing. I enjoyed the networking, the advice, and concrete examples for resources. One of the speakers was a PVAMU alum now working for Rickey Smiley named India Monee. Another Black woman that inspired me was Karlet Hewitt. They both believed in themselves and took on their dreams. Ms. Monee created a name for herself and created her own experiences when there was not a lot available in the area. She one of the few YouTube college vloggers for PV. She was the Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper and the host of her radio show The Downtown Tea. Because of her experiences with campus events, she could land a job with Rickey Smiley, Blativity, and Radio One. In Hewlitt's past, she was bossed around and undervalued by her boss, so she quit her company and created her own called The Purpoint Group. She plans, hosts, and creates brands for events for her clients. Both ladies found their value and most importantly mentioned that it was all due to God's presence. Both of their stories are longer but ultimately, I loved that they believed in themselves and created their own brand. Despite my mom, dad, and family telling this to me, I did not want to believe that I was exceptional. I did not put myself out there, but now more than ever, I do. I want to follow my dreams and hope to inspire someone to do the same as my mother taught me.
Quotes from India Monee in "How I Manifested My Dream in Months"
- "set your intention on what you want and what you are looking for, don't focus on the negatives...because it will become the priority"
- "I'm not going to think small, I'm going to go for exactly what I want"
- "[speak] it into existence"
- "It's not about what you know but who you know"
- "your season, your situation is unlike anybody else's and so what you see doesn't mean that it's always factual"
- "I no longer allow myself to compare my situation to anybody else's because I have the pretty pictures too"
- "It's very dangerous when we start to compare ourselves"
